These GPSes come with an extra 1 Mb memory, that is factory filled with a marine and/or Points of Interest (POI) database. This database is - for European users - almost useless. It does not contain a list of important buoys. It looks as if the last update of this file was in 2001. To make a better use of the extra memory, I compiled a list of waypoints in the German Bight and in the western Baltic, and found out how to put these into the GPS:
Note: This method does NOT use ANY memory that is reserved for your own waypoints, tracks or routes: it is an extra. |

- check whether your GPS really is a Garmin 72, 76, 152 or Etrex Venture [if not, don't read on here, but go to the 'nopoints' and/or 'baltic' page to store smaller collections of waypoints in the waypoints-memory of your GPS] - read the following chapter on this page: 'how to restore the original database easily', and then come back here - on your harddisk make a directory c:\nopoipoi - download nopoipoi.exe - and place it in c:\nopoipoi [if you don't want to download .exe files, you can also download nopoipoi.zip and unzip that file in c:\nopoipoi ] - connect your PC-to-GPS cable to the PC and GPS as you would do to transfer waypoints or tracks [if you dont know how to, and can read Dutch: look here] - switch the GPS on (make sure the batteries are not empty!), and then put it in simulator mode [76: MENU -> Start Simulator] - on the GPS choose 'Garmin' or 'GRMN-GRMN' as the communication protocol (NOT: 'NMEA') [76: MENU -> MENU -> Setup -> Interface] - on the PC, start c:\nopoipoi\nopoipoi.exe - wait until the file is uploaded to your GPS - your GPS will reset, and come back in simulator mode - on the GPS, check whether the database has loaded and is activated [76: MENU -> MENU -> MapSource Info] - select the map screen on your GPS to see if the buoys show [76: PAGE or QUIT one or more times] - check whether you can search the buoys by name [76: NAV -> Go To Point -> Cities]

On the official Garmin website look for 'Download Preloaded POI Database for ...' on the right hand side of one of these pages and follow the instructions: Garmin 72 Garmin 76 Garmin 152 Garmin Etrex Venture Hint: use this option to renew your built in database BEFORE you replace it with nopoipoi. If the Garmin programme won't work, do NOT use nopoipoi.

Send an empty mail to
with as subject
the word 'nopoipoi', and you'll automagically get an e-mail as soon as the database is updated.
Note: Downloading and updates are free. When at sea, a not timely updated collection may induce a false sense of security. [This is especially true in the Wadden area where important buoys may be relocated 3 to 5 times a year]. Therefore, do not pass on your downloaded file to others, but let them visit this page themselves: http://filo.nl/users/nopoints/poi

It's not easy, being green... Nopoipoi is based on the excellent recipe by Thomas Hasse, in German: POI-Speicher mit eigenen Daten nutzen Nopoipoi uses sendmap, a small part of: cgpsmapper. I also used the great programs GPS Trackmaker, and Mapdekode.
